Meet Nikki & the chicos family

Richland Ag Consulting was born from my lifelong desire to be a “helper” and the necessity of finding work-life balance after having a child with special needs.

I worked as a medical social worker for 10 years, but after having a child with special needs I found it difficult to give my all to patients while also meeting the needs of my family. I returned to school for Human Resources, which led me to a job with a local grain marketing company. With this company I wore many hats including bookkeeper. I found the bookkeeping side of the business to be unexpectedly enjoyable and in 2023 I took a leap of faith and started my own bookkeeping business: Richland Ag Consulting.

Our family lives on a century farm in Southern Minnesota producing row crops, raising beef cattle, chickens, and a couple of adorable little boys. Check out this video to learn more about the Chicos family.

CLIENT testimonials

"I used to handle all of my small business bookkeeping myself. I'd be so busy with other business priorities that bookkeeping always took a backseat. Then, when tax season rolled around I was scrambling to clean up my books so that my CPA could file taxes. Now that I have Nikki's help, my books are always up to date, she sends me my reports monthly so I can keep tabs on how my business is doing financially, and she collaborates with my CPA so that tax season is no longer a nightmare for me!"
- SARAH
"Nikki reconciles all of the scale tickets and grain settlement statements for our farm. She discovered that there was a load of soybeans missing from one of the settlement statements. After a few phone calls we figured out that the load was accidentally assigned to the wrong customer number at the soybean plant. She saved me over $10,000 that I otherwise wouldn't have known was missing!"
- TODD
"I can't say enough about how essential Nikki has been to my business. As a new business owner, her enthusiasm to take on new challenges and expertise in bookkeeping has brought clarity and order to what was once an unorganized method. Nikki's attention to detail, prompt communication, and dedication has saved me countless hours and provided peace of mind. She is a key part of my team. If you're looking for someone who can seamlessly handle your finances with precision and professionalism, Nikki Chicos is the one you need!"
- TINA
"I market my grain with a variety of local cooperatives. I rely on Nikki to help me keep track of the different contracts to ensure that I’m not over or undersold. Before Nikki started helping me, it took me many hours and multiple phone calls to get a handle on the amount of grain I had contracted and what was still available to contract. Now, my grain contract tracking program is consistently updated by Nikki and it's easy for me to make grain marketing decisions quickly and efficiently."
- TODD
"My goal for last year was to reduce the use of my line of credit. Nikki helped me with budgeting and cash flow forecasting and I was able to achieve my goal! Now I have a better understanding of my business' cash flow needs and my operation is financially stable."

Frequently Asked

What software do you use for bookkeeping?

I have experience using a variety of financial programs including QuickBooks Online, Ultra Farm, FinPack, and Excel spreadsheets. I'm currently demoing a new agricultural based program called Ambrook. If you have an existing program that is working well for your farm operation, I'm happy to learn more about it. I am always on the hunt for the most efficient yet cost-effective program for my clients.

What type of businesses do you serve?

Being part of a farm family and rural community means that I’m always happy to work with other farmers and agricultural related businesses. I also support a variety of non-profits and small businesses.

Bookkeeper vs. Accountant – what’s the difference?

Bookkeepers and accountants share common goals – they support your business but do so in different ways using different skillsets.

As a bookkeeper I focus on keeping you financially organized by recording and categorizing daily transactions, sending invoices, recording payments received, paying bills on behalf of your business, processing payroll, generating monthly financial reports, reconciling accounts, and preparing the books for your accountant.

Your accountant can help you analyze the cost of your operations, advise you on financial decisions, perform audits, conduct tax planning, and file tax returns.

Why should I hire a bookkeeper?

Are you spending precious hours fumbling through bookkeeping tasks. Or worse, spending evenings and weekends on bookwork instead of spending time with family and friends? Was last tax season a nightmare? As a bookkeeper I can:

  • Allow you to keep your focus on your core needs
  • Support a better work-life balance
  • Help you avoid falling behind on invoicing and wasting time chasing unpaid accounts
  • Improve your operation's cash flow
  • Generate useful reports to help you make informed decisions
  • Keep your books up to date so that tax season is a breeze!

What can I expect from a free bookkeeping consultation?

We can either meet in-person or virtually, whichever you prefer. During our meeting I want to learn more about your operation's mission, goals, strengths, and challenges. We’ll dive into what’s not working when it comes to bookkeeping and which services I may be able to offer along with a pricing quote.

What steps do you take to ensure my financial data is secure?

It can be uncomfortable to share your business financial information with someone else. Confidentiality is my top priority and my goal is to help you feel at ease. I utilize a secured internet connection at all times, password management software, multifactor authentication, and am backed by both liability and cyber security insurance.
